Every Problem Created For Us is the new EP from Sea Dramas, the San Francisco Bay Area based music project led by singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Scott Pettersen. Comprising four outtakes from 2024’s Escape Scenes and one new instrumental, the EP builds on Pettersen’s baroque pop wall-of-sound while incorporating influences ranging from 70’s Italian soundtracks to 60’s California pop and lysergic psych-folk.

While working on Escape Scenes, Pettersen had originally considered recording and releasing a double album, but scrapped the idea after deciding it would be better to spread the songs across a pair of albums. Most of those tracks were lost to the sands of time, but four of them were rescued from the dustbin and brought to life on Every Problem Created For Us. Another distinguishing feature of the EP is the inclusion of live drums & percussion, courtesy of collaborator David Brandt. Though most of the EP was recorded at home by Pettersen, David Glasebrook (Patti Smith, Michael Nau, Sam Burton) engineered the drum recordings in addition to mixing & mastering the album at his studio The Garden Shed in Oakland, CA.

Opening track “Down at the Bottom” is a song of dichotomies in both content and creation. Lyrically it’s about loss and rebuilding; despair and hope. According to Pettersen, “Musically it began with an alternate guitar tuning and a foggy notion of tropicalia and later chill wave and landed somewhere in-between and nowhere near.”  Meanwhile, “Cipresso e il Mare” was written and recorded in one afternoon. “There are Mediterranean cypress trees in the yard and when the sun is low cascading through their foliage it’s not hard to imagine a summer drive or train ride through the Italian countryside en route to the ocean. The english translation is “Cypress and the Sea”. Inspired by the great “loungey” Italian soundtracks of the 60s and 70s” says Pettersen.
